This policy brief presents an update of the seventh policy brief (from June 2013) by analysing how research carried out under the FP7 Specific Programme ‘Cooperation’ over its entire period (from 2007 to 2013) contributes to sustainable development.

The Europe 2020 flagship initiative “A resource-efficient Europe” was set up in order to provide guidance on EU-level policies in a variety of fields, ultimately aiming at decoupling the use of natural resources and the associated environmental impacts from economic growth. This policy brief analyses how research carried out under the FP7 Specific Programme ‘Cooperation’ contributes to the objectives set in the flagship initiative.

Transport is a fundamental sector of the European economy and society, employing about 10 million people in the EU. Under the Europe 2020 strategy, transport is most prominently addressed in the 2011 white paper ‘Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area’ under the ‘Resource-efficient Europe’ flagship initiative. This policy brief analyses how FP7-funded research addresses the sustainable development-related aspects of the 2011 transport white paper.

The transition towards a green economy is increasingly taken up by policy making, both at the European (Europe 2020 strategy) and the international (UNEP, OECD, Rio+20) level. Research and development is considered as important vehicle for engaging into this transition. Against this background, this policy brief analyses how research carried out under the FP7 Specific Programme ‘Cooperation’ addresses the green economy topic. Particular emphasis is put on international collaborations with developing countries.
