Transport is a fundamental sector of the European economy and society, employing about 10 million people in the EU. Under the Europe 2020 strategy, transport is most prominently addressed in the 2011 white paper ‘Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area’ under the ‘Resource-efficient Europe’ flagship initiative. This policy brief analyses how FP7-funded research addresses the sustainable development-related aspects of the 2011 transport white paper.

The transition towards a green economy is increasingly taken up by policy making, both at the European (Europe 2020 strategy) and the international (UNEP, OECD, Rio+20) level. Research and development is considered as important vehicle for engaging into this transition. Against this background, this policy brief analyses how research carried out under the FP7 Specific Programme ‘Cooperation’ addresses the green economy topic. Particular emphasis is put on international collaborations with developing countries.
